A guide to converting Hijri dates to Gregorian

You often come across a Hijri date in an old document, a certificate, a deed or a history book and need its Gregorian equivalent, either to compare it with other dates or to enter it into a system that only accepts the Gregorian calendar. This tool takes a Hijri day, month and year and returns the matching Gregorian date in day/month/year format.

It works inside your browser without any external service, using the arithmetic (tabular) Islamic calendar: the Hijri date is turned into a Julian day number, which is then converted to the Gregorian calendar.

How to use it

  1. Type the day number in the "Day" field (1 to 30).
  2. Pick the month from the "Month" drop-down, which lists all twelve Hijri months from Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah.
  3. Enter the year in the "Hijri year" field; it starts at 1447.
  4. Press "Convert". The result appears as day/month/year.

What you can control

  • Choose the month by name, so you do not need to remember its number.
  • Enter any Hijri year, past for historical dates or future for planning.
  • Month names are in English on this page and in Arabic on the Arabic version.

Practical uses

  • Converting a Hijri birth date from an old document so you can enter it in an online form.
  • Finding the Gregorian year of a historical event recorded with a Hijri date.
  • Estimating when an upcoming occasion, such as 1 Ramadan or 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, will fall so you can plan leave early.
  • Matching an expiry date written in Hijri against a Gregorian work calendar.

Tips and notes

  • In the arithmetic calendar months alternate between 30 and 29 days. If you enter day 30 for a month that has 29 days in this system, the result equals the first day of the following month; the tool does not show an error.
  • The result is an estimate and may differ by one or two days from the Umm al-Qura calendar or your country's official moon-sighting announcement, so do not rely on it alone for the start of fasting or Eid.
  • For legal or official purposes, check the Gregorian date recorded by the relevant authority.
  • Very old results are expressed in the modern Gregorian calendar even for years before it was adopted, so take care when comparing dates earlier than the sixteenth century with sources that use the Julian calendar.

To convert in the other direction, use the Gregorian to Hijri converter. To count the days between two dates, try the date difference calculator, and the White Days counter shows the recommended fasting days each month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I enter day 30 for Safar?

Safar has 29 days in the arithmetic calendar, so the tool returns the Gregorian date for 1 Rabi al-Awwal instead of showing an error.

Why does 1447 appear in the year field?

It is simply a default value to save time. Replace it with any Hijri year you need.

Can I estimate the Gregorian date of next Ramadan with this tool?

Yes, roughly: choose day 1, Ramadan and the year you want. The actual start is announced officially based on moon sighting.

In what format is the result shown?

As numbers in day/month/year order, for example 18/2/2026.
