How to convert a Gregorian date to Hijri

You may need the Hijri equivalent of a Gregorian date for many reasons: filling in a form that asks for the Hijri date, finding your birth date in the Islamic calendar, recording a family occasion in both calendars, or estimating when a religious occasion will fall. This tool does the conversion in seconds and shows the day number, the Hijri month name and the year followed by "AH".

The calculation runs entirely in your browser with no external service. It uses the arithmetic (tabular) Islamic calendar, a fixed mathematical system that turns the date into a Julian day number and then derives the Hijri day, month and year from it.

How to use it

  1. Click the "Gregorian date" field to open your browser's date picker.
  2. Choose the day, month and year you want to convert.
  3. Press "Convert".
  4. The result appears as the day, the Hijri month name (for example Ramadan or Dhu al-Hijjah) and the Hijri year.

How the conversion works

  • The arithmetic calendar runs in 30-year cycles, 11 of which are leap years with one extra day.
  • Months alternate between 30 and 29 days, and Dhu al-Hijjah has 30 days in a leap year.
  • A Hijri year is therefore 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year, which is why Ramadan moves earlier every year.
  • Month names are shown in English on the English page and in Arabic on the Arabic page.

Practical examples

  • Finding your Hijri birth date for an application, then double-checking it against your official documents.
  • Writing a contract or letter date in both calendars.
  • Working out which Hijri month a historical or family event fell in.
  • Estimating when the next Hijri month begins by trying consecutive dates and watching the month change.

Tips and notes

  • The result is an estimate. The arithmetic calendar does not use moon sighting and will not always match the Umm al-Qura calendar or your country's announcements; a difference of one or two days can occur in some months.
  • For religious dates such as the start of fasting or the Day of Arafah, follow the official announcement in your country rather than a calculated date.
  • For official paperwork that requires a specific Hijri date, use the date printed on the document itself or the authority's own calendar.
  • The tool converts one date at a time and needs no sign-up.

To convert the other way, use the Hijri to Gregorian converter. To work out your exact age, try the age calculator, and to see how far away the holy month is, open the Ramadan countdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the Umm al-Qura calendar?

Umm al-Qura is based on astronomical calculations of the moon's position, while this tool uses the tabular 30-year-cycle calendar. The two can differ by a day or two in some months.

Can I convert an old date, such as one in 1950?

Yes. Any date your browser's date picker accepts can be converted; the formula works across a wide range of years.

Why does the same Gregorian day have a different Hijri date each year?

Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, the matching Hijri date shifts earlier year after year.

Does the result show the day of the week?

No. It shows only the day number, Hijri month name and year.
