About Remove Image Background
This background remover separates the main subject of a photo, whether a person, a product or a pet, from everything around it, and gives you a PNG with a transparent background or a solid colour of your choice. The work is done by an AI model that downloads to your browser and runs on your own device, so your photo is never uploaded to a server.
On first use the browser downloads the engine (about 10 MB) and a model, Fast at about 44 MB or Precise at about 88 MB, with a progress bar. Both then stay in your browser cache, so later runs start without downloading again. It works well for shop product photos, profile and CV pictures, and cut-outs for social media designs.
Why use it
- Free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of images.
- Your photo stays on your device: the model runs in the browser, and the only download is the model itself.
- Two models: Fast for most photos, Precise for tricky edges such as hair and fine details.
- A before/after slider lets you check the result before you download it.
- Choose a transparent background or a solid colour from presets or the colour picker.
- Output keeps your original resolution, up to 4096 px on the longest side on computers and 2048 px on phones.
How to use
Upload a photo
Drag an image onto the box or tap it to browse. JPG, PNG and WebP are supported.
Pick a model
Fast (about 44 MB) suits most images. Precise (about 88 MB) gives cleaner edges but is slower and needs more memory.
Remove the background
Press Remove background. The first time, you will see the model download progress; processing then usually takes 5 to 30 seconds depending on the device.
Compare and choose a background
Drag the slider to compare before and after. Keep it Transparent, or choose Solid colour and pick a preset or any colour from the picker.
Download
Press Download PNG. The file is saved with your image name plus -no-bg.
Examples
Product photo for an online shop
You shot a perfume bottle on the kitchen table. Upload it, choose Solid colour and white, and you have a clean product shot ready for a listing.
Profile picture for a CV
A selfie with a cluttered room behind you: remove the background with the Precise model, then choose a light grey for a more formal look.
Cut-out for a social post
You want your cat without a background to drop onto a Canva design. Download the transparent PNG and drag it straight into the design.
A batch of phone photos
After the first image the model stays cached, so you can process product photos one after another without waiting for another download.
| Feature | Fast | Precise |
|---|---|---|
| First download | about 44 MB + engine | about 88 MB + engine |
| Speed | Faster | A little slower |
| Edge quality | Good for most photos | Cleaner on hair and fine detail |
| Best on phones | Yes | Needs more memory |
Tips
- Results are best when the subject stands out clearly from the background in colour or lighting.
- If bits of background remain, try the Precise model before editing the photo.
- Very large images are scaled to 4096 px (2048 px on phones) to protect your device's memory, and the tool tells you when that happens.
- Use a transparent background if the image goes on top of another design, and a solid colour if you will post it as is.
- The first download is tens of megabytes, so Wi-Fi is a good idea.
Your photo is processed inside your browser and is never uploaded to a server. Only the engine and model files are downloaded, and they are kept in your browser cache to speed up the next run.
Frequently asked questions
Is this background remover free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of images.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs inside your browser on your own device. What comes from the internet is the model; your photo never leaves the device.
Why is the first run slower?
The browser has to download the engine (about 10 MB) and the model (about 44 or 88 MB). They are then kept in the browser cache and are not downloaded again.
What is the difference between Fast and Precise?
Fast is smaller and lighter and handles most photos well. Precise is about twice the size and gives cleaner edges on hair and fine details, but it is slower and needs more memory.
What format is the result?
Always PNG, because it keeps transparency. With a solid colour the file is still a PNG, just with a filled background.
Can I make the background white instead of transparent?
Yes. Choose Solid colour, then white, another preset, or any colour from the picker.
Does removing the background lower the resolution?
No, the result has the same dimensions as your photo. The exception is images larger than 4096 px on the longest side (2048 px on phones), which are scaled down first, and the tool tells you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Processing is slower than on a computer and can take up to 30 seconds; the Fast model is the better choice on phones with limited memory.
Why did some background remain, or part of the subject disappear?
This happens when the subject and background have similar colours, or the scene is busy. Try the Precise model, or a photo with better lighting and a simpler background.
Does it only work with people?
No. It works with any clear main subject: people, products, pets or cars. You do not need to mark the subject; the model finds it on its own.
I got a message that the model could not be downloaded. What now?
Check your internet connection and try again. Your photo was not uploaded in any case, and a connection is only needed for the first download.
Is this a free alternative to remove.bg?
remove.bg has announced that its standalone site closes on 1 December 2026, with its background removal moving into Canva. This tool is a free background remover that runs in your browser, needs no account, and never uploads your photo.
What technology does it use?
The ISNet background-removal model published by IMG.LY with its open-source @imgly/background-removal library, run in the browser with onnxruntime-web.
